Landmark Graphics Releases 3D Drill View -- Integrating Knowledge Management With Real-Time Decision Making

DALLAS, Oct 1, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

New product with unique capabilities for visualizing disparate data in the context of the earth model

Landmark Graphics, Corp., a wholly owned business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL), today announced the release of 3D Drill View(TM), a new, innovative 3-dimensional visualization product for geologicaL, geophysical and drilling information. 3D Drill View is a PC-based Windows(R) 2000 software product that supports reservoir development projects where asset teams and engineers are considering new approaches to well planning, methods for early identification of drilling hazards and real-time decision support during the drilling phase. BP, a strategic partner with Landmark, provided support and early utilization for this innovative product.

3D Drill View has unique capabilities for visualizing drilling and well operations data directly in an earth model, enabling new levels of learning and knowledge management. 3D Drill View combines the power of OpenWorks(R) earth modeling with DIMS(TM) well history data. The integration of earth modeling and drilling knowledge management in 3D Drill View enhances field development strategies, promotes safety, reduces potential problems during drilling and leads to cost savings for the operator. All of these benefits are made possible by viewing historical drilling problems and creating contingency plans before drilling is initiated, which further protects the environment.

"Linking engineering tools with knowledge management will allow engineers to focus and apply previously recorded field and well data, and assist them in developing improved well plans while avoiding potential hazards," said John Gibson, president and CEO of Landmark. "The combination of better planned wells and a reduction in hazards yields an instant savings both in dollars and in time for our customers."

"3D Drill View dynamically displays three-dimensional real-time updates of well trajectories and log curves from MWD/LWD drilling services," said Bill Sanstrom, vice president of Landmark's Drilling, Production and Business Management Systems. "This results in direct real-time comparison of plan versus actual information and allows for improved decision-making during drilling operations."

"Staff from BP have been involved from initial conception through pilot testing of the first prototype version. It is seen as key technology for bringing together multidiscipline teams to help plan our future wells and use all the information we have available," said BP Norway Business Unit Leader, Anne Drinkwater.

This new product from Landmark brings a new dimension to the visualization of geological and drilling information. For the first time, a single product offers both integration and collaboration between asset team members with the capability for each team member to visually manage the data while improving decisions for the entire operation, from planning to post well analysis.
