Nitrogen 2000 Successfully Commissions Trinidad Ammonia Plant Using KBR Technology; Facility Goes On-Line Nearly Five Months Ahead of Schedule
POINT LISAS, Trinidad, Oct 27, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- KBR's proprietary, low energy KAAP technology has been installed in Nitrogen 2000 Unlimited's (N2000) newly commissioned 1,850 MTPD (metric tons per day) ammonia plant in Point Lisas, Trinidad. The plant was built by MAN Ferrostaal Aktiengesellschaft of Germany and is the fourth 1,850 MTPD ammonia plant in Trinidad to use KBR's KAAP technology. KBR is the engineering and construction subsidiary of Halliburton (NYSE:HAL).
KBR provided the engineering design work and licensing for its KAAP ammonia process, and also procured the KAAP ammonia reactor. The plant was successfully commissioned and started up almost five months ahead of schedule, passing all performance tests shortly thereafter. Incorporating the more active KAAP ammonia synthesis catalyst into a new grassroots plant allows ammonia to be produced at pressures 40 percent lower than conventional technologies, resulting in lower capital and operating costs.
"KBR is the leading global supplier of ammonia technologies and has installed more than 50 percent of the world's ammonia capacity," said Andy Lane, president and CEO of KBR. "KBR's KAAP ammonia technology is a low energy and low cost process ideally suited for large capacity applications like the 1,850 MTPD plant for N2000. The completion of this fourth ammonia facility in Trinidad to use our KAAP process further illustrates the market's growing acceptance and the solid performance of our technology."
The N2000 plant is the second ammonia facility in which KBR has served as the licensor and engineering subcontractor to Ferrostaal. KBR's prior project with Ferrostaal, the Caribbean Nitrogen Company's (CNC) 1,850 MTPD KAAP plant, was successfully commissioned in July 2002. KBR has previously provided engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for KAAP ammonia plants for two other clients in Trinidad. The 1,850 MTPD plant for Point Lisas Nitrogen Ltd. (PLNL) was commissioned in 1998, and the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) plant, also a 1,850 MTPD facility, was commissioned in 1998.
